Tapping ASMR Sounds: Wood, Plastic, Metal and More
Fingertips and nails on wood, plastic and metal. Four to try below, and why the material changes how tapping feels.
Samples
Tap a sound to play it on a loop, and tap it again to stop. Headphones help, especially for close-mic triggers.
These are 4 of the 26 sounds in this group. Tingles ASMR has 255 in all. See what else is in the app.
What tapping is
Tapping is fingertips or nails striking an object close to the microphone, usually in short, irregular bursts. Crisp sounds like these were the third most common trigger in Barratt and Davis’s 2015 survey, after whispering and personal attention. Tapping is also the trigger where the object changes the experience most.
The app’s tapping sounds group roughly by material:
- Wood: Wooden Blocks, Wooden Bowl, Cutting Board, Wooden Tweezers. Wood tends to sound warm and rounded.
- Plastic: Plastic Box, Small Case, Glasses Case, Makeup Case, CD, Credit Card, Plastic Coaster, Plastic Glass, Plastic Spoon, Plastic Toy. Lighter and more hollow, with a quick click at the start of each tap.
- Metal: Coins and Metal Jar. Brighter and sharper. Some people love it and some find it too much.
- Soft and unusual surfaces: Soap Bar, Lemon, Pine Cone, Cork Board, Cork Coaster, Notebook, Playing Card, Tissue Pouch, Massage Balls, Rubber Pipe. These are duller and closer, which suits listeners who find hard tapping too alert.
If tapping hasn’t worked for you before, try a different material before giving up on the trigger.
Why tapping works for some people
Researchers have started looking at what makes a sound “tingly”, rather than which category it belongs to. A 2024 study by Terashima, Tada and Kondo, covered in the triggers guide, found that tingle strength could be predicted from the texture of the sound in the second or so before each tingle. That fits what listeners report: two tapping recordings of the same object can feel completely different.
Recording distance matters too. A 2022 study by Shimokura found that the feeling of the sound being close to you was the main psychological factor in the response. Most tapping ASMR is recorded a few centimetres from the microphone for that reason, and it’s why headphones make such a difference.
How to use tapping
- For focus: tapping’s irregular rhythm works as background for reading or work. Keep the volume low and pair it with a steady sound from white noise so the gaps between taps don’t pull your attention.
- For sleep: softer surfaces (soap, cork, tissue pouch) are usually better than plastic or metal once you’re winding down.
- In a mix: the app’s Rhythmic Tapping mix pairs Small Case with Plastic Box. In your own mix, try one wooden and one soft sound at different volumes so they don’t blur into one.
Tapping sits in the “Tactile” group in a 2025 study of 16,679 people by Greer and colleagues. If you like it, scratching and brushing are the closest relatives to try next.
